RESULTS

Glaciochemical measurements completed
Major ion, trace and rare earth element concentrations were determined for selected samples in cores and trenches from 2009 and 2010. Analysis is ongoing.

Preliminary time-scale established
A preliminary time-scale for the AH MIF was established using δD (ice) in combination with ⁴⁰Ar_atm and δ¹⁸O_atm of trapped gases from Princeton University. This will be made available with the publication of our submitted manuscript.

Analysis of stable water isotopes completed
15 cm resolution δD along a 225 m core and 10 m resolution δD along the flowline will be made available to the public soon

GPS measurements processed
Nicky finished processing all GPS measurements from 2009 and 2010. These are now available at NSIDC

Flow line revised
Based on last season's results a new flow line was established. Nicky is working on a paper that will discuss ice flow parameters for the Allan Hills area.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Our research is enhanced by studies previously conducted in Allan Hills blue ice area (BIA).
Fundamental uncertainties remain in our understanding of natural and human-imposed climate changes, and in the factors controlling climate dynamics over the past several million years.

The Allan Hills are believed to contain ice as old as 2.8 million years (Harvey, 1998; Scherer, 1997) at the ice surface. 2MBIA is a collaborative research project, funded by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs, focused on exploring the climate archive in the Allan Hills BIA.

EXPEDITIONS

Study Area. The Allan Hills are on the western flank of a portion of the Transantarctic Mountains known as the Convoy Range. The range is a barrier to ice flow that splits the East Antarctic Ice Sheet into the Mackay and Mawson outlet glaciers.
